What is the best way to travel?
The only way to travel to Ban Phe, the port for boats to Koh Samet from Bangkok is by road. There are no direct boats, planes or trains to Ban Phe from Bangkok and the island does not have it’s own airport.
By Bus from Bangkok
From Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok there is an airport express Bus AE3 outside the arrivals and departure area which will take you to Ekkamai Bus station on Sukhumvit Road. The cost is about 150 baht and operates from 5am daily.
For those not traveling from the airport the Ekkamai bus station is located directly opposite the BTS station for Ekkamai. From there you can catch one of the half hourly air conditioned public buses that leave Ekkamai station to Ban Phe station between 5am and 7pm each day. The journey will take 3 and a half hours approximately and cost 175 baht one way. From the bus station the Ferry harbour is a stone’s throw away.
If you prefer to travel in comfort there are private minivan services run by tour agents that pick up from hotels around the Khao San Road area. The cost is slightly dearer at around 500 Baht but will take you direct to Ban Phe Pier.

By Taxi from Bangkok
You can arrange transport using a taxi service through one of the many taxi drivers around Bangkok City willing to take you, from outside Suvarnabhumi airport or your hotel in Bangkok may be able to offer this service. Cost can vary from 1500 baht upwards dependent on your negotiation skills. Some taxi drivers will have a rate card in there taxi so look out for these to avoid paying over the odds. Travel time is approximately 2.5 hours. When returning from Samet there is a Taxi Service available to book on the pier. Transport back to Bangkok is 1,700 baht.
How to get from Pattaya to Ban Phe
By Bus from Pattaya
One of the many travel agents in Pattaya will be able to arrange a mini van to take you to Rayong or Bang Phe. The journey will take approximately an hour and cost around 100 baht per seat. Alternatively, you can flag down a passing air-con or public bus. Services runs every half an hour from the corner of Sukhumvit and Pattaya Neua roads. This service will only take you to Rayong bus station, so you will need to catch a connecting bus or Songtaew to Bang Phe.
By Taxi from Pattaya
Although quicker and more convenient traveling by taxi between Pattaya and ban Phe can be very expensive. Some companies will charge you as much as 1200 baht for the short journey so be sure to shop around first before deciding which driver to go with.
Getting to Ban Phe from the South of Thailand
By Bus
Transport by bus can be arranged through your accommodation or through one of the many travel agents in the south of Thailand. Most will involve traveling through the night due to the amount of distance to travel and stop in the capital of Bangkok. See our Bangkok section for ways to get to Samet.
By Air
Bangkok Airways operate direct flights daily from both Koh Samui and Phuket that will take you to Rayong (U-Tapao) Airport.
There are Two daily flight from Koh Samui leaving at 9.10am at 11.10am each day taking an hour and 20 minutes approximately. Prices start from around 3700thb for a one way ticket.
There is One flight operated by Bangkok Airways each day, from Phuket leaving at 3.10pm and taking 1 hour 40 minutes approximately. Fares start from 2400 baht.
From Koh Chang to Koh Samet
By Bus
An all in one ticket can be bought from any of the travel agents and some hotels in Koh Chang. The transport will include your two ferry crossings and bus journey from Koh Chang to Koh Samet. The bus journey from pier to pier is around 3 and a half hours. An all in one ticket will cost around 500 baht.
By Taxi
If your in somewhat of a hurry then the quickest way to get to Koh Samet from Koh Chang is traveling by taxi along the mainland journey between the two islands. Expect to pay a premium for this service in comparison to traveling by bus. The journey is around 3 hours from pier to pier and costs from 2500 baht upwards dependent on your bartering skills.
